Message from the Acting Head

Since the formation of the Division of Environmental Science and Engineering (ESE) in April 2005, ESE has organized itself to provide an integrated interdisciplinary education and research-based programs traditionally hosted in Civil and Chemical Engineering departments. The programs emphasize multi- and trans-disciplinary approaches toward solving complex environmental problems. This arrangement facilitates ESE to pursue its overarching objective to impart to students a sound scientific knowledge, combined with advanced engineering capabilities, so that they may understand local, regional and international environmental issues.

ESE provides ample opportunities for the development of appropriate technologies and systems to address environmental issues that are strongly non-linear processes and therefore demand an approach transcending traditional research boundaries and paradigms.

We provide comprehensive and stimulating education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and seek bright, creative and inquisitive individuals to pursue their dreams with us. We actively encourage students to participate in exploratory research and experiential learning during their time with us.

By 2050, it is estimated that more than 40% of the world's population would be deprived access to fresh water. The situation requires immediate ramification. Do you have a calling that will lead you to pursue water quality and treatment, used-water reclamation and reuse, membrane separations & technologies and water resources? Let your passion find expression at ESE.

Want to play an integral role in the green revolution? Travel with us into relatively uncharted waters of energy resources, conservation and renewable energy.

Are you fascinated by environmental chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology & biotechnology; human & environmental health; nano-biotechnology & nano-materials; sensor systems in air, land & water; and separation science and technologies? We are proactively working and training students in these areas.

Are you excited about aerosol science and technology, air pollution assessment and control, climate change? Come join us in our passionate endeavours in these areas.

We also investigate areas of hazardous and solid waste, marine & coastal systems, and sustainable development.

Singapore is a dynamic place to live, study and play! Come join ESE at NUS where there are no walls in your pursue of excellence and the sky is the limit.

Interested? Cool! Come join us and let's build a green and sustainable future.
